IELTS Speaking test: Computers, Internet and Technology

IELTS Speaking test: Computers, Internet and Technology

IELTS Speaking test: Computers, Internet and Technology
IELTS Speaking test: Computers, Internet and Technology

Nowadays many students get questions related to computers, internet and technology on IELTS Speaking test. Here are some sample questions and answers.

IELTS Speaking Part 1

Computers

Do you use computers?

Yes. Computers are a must for my line of work. As I am a creative writer/ blogger/ video editor, it is mandatory for me to own and use a computer. Additionally, they also come in handy for watching tv shows in beautiful resolutions.

What do you use a computer to do?

Because of my profession, I mostly use the computer for writing articles. I also make videos and run a photography blog of my own. I also use my computer to make small videos about technology.

Did you use computers when you were little?

No. When I was a child, computers were a luxury. I remember playing Solitaire on my father’s computer at his office though. Computers in those days were expensive. So we never had one at home.

Do people often use computers these days?

Almost everyone, rich or poor has a computer these days. Almost every job demands that you own a computer, and some employers even give one to you. Owning a computer has morphed from luxury to a necessity in a very short amount of time.

Will people continue to use computers in the future?

Yes. In a few decades, computers will have single handedly become a household item and a necessity to own. It can only go up from here. People will continue to own computers as well as use them practically forever.

Internet

How important is the Internet to you?

As a writer and a blogger, the internet is very important to me. I use it to back up all my files as well as email my boss my work. Also, I edit some videos on it too.

Do you use the Internet more for work or in your free time?

I use the internet equally for work and for my free time. I mostly blog and write articles while working. During my free time, I watch films or YouTube videos to keep myself entertained. I also try to write personal blogs in my free time on important topics.

Do you think you use the Internet too much?

I think so. I use the internet a lot because of my work. In my free time, I try to limit my usage, but my hobbies lead me to overstep my limits. So, I do think that I utilise the internet a lot, but not too much.

How will the Internet develop in the future?

In my opinion, the internet has already reached its full potential. The only thing that will change is the internet speed. I think that there will be a time when we will be able to load massive amounts of data in a ridiculously short amount of time.

Are there any negative things about the Internet?

There are a lot of harmful things on the internet. The list is almost too long to list here but I would like to state that one of the most negative things about the internet is the trolls. They are almost everywhere and use fake ids to scam or insult people for no apparent reason.

What are your favourite websites?

I would say that my favourite website is YouTube. It can provide a healthy amount of entertainment as well as education. I usually watch tech videos as well as old anime for entertainment. Another one is Facebook so that I can connect with people.

What are the positive and negative things about the Internet?

The positives of the internet are that if you are willing, you can learn a lot. There are online courses that get you a degree online. This helps you get a job. The negative thing is that your data can be sold and your privacy can be breached.

IELTS Speaking Part 2

Cue Card 1 on website you use

Describe a website that you often use.

You should say:

  • what type of website it is
  • how you found out about it
  • what it allows you to do
  • why you find it useful.

Answer

The website I use the most is YouTube. I found out about it via my friends back when YouTube was in its infancy. Back then it was not seen as a good idea as the internet was still in its developmental phase.

YouTube is a video sharing platform where people from all over the world make videos and upload them for people to see, comment on and enjoy. Videos are also made on education topics. There are tutorials on a variety of topics. The interface is very simple. You just make a video and use YouTube to upload it. You can also use analytics to see who views it and the comments. You can also monetize your videos so that you can earn from them.

I find it useful as it can provide a unique alternative career to people who feel that they are not meant for conventional careers. This means that you can gain both fame and money from YouTube videos while informing the people about something. This also turns what you love into a job.

Cue Card 2 on Computers

Describe something enjoyable you can do on a computer.

You should say:

  • what it is
  • what equipment or software you need to do that
  • why and how often you do it
  • and explain why you enjoy doing this on a computer.

Answer

I find the most enjoyable activity to do is playing games. I often play heavy games such as Doom or Grand Theft Auto V or sometimes even God of War. To play heavy games, you often need a good or a decent graphics card that can handle the games. I use an Nvidia RTX 2060 as it gives an amazing performance at a lower price. There is no specific software required as the necessary software comes with the game and is automatically downloaded.

I play games mostly to alleviate boredom as well as to get some amount of excitement in doing the story missions. It also helps me fill my hours as I am unable to go out because of the pandemic. Playing games is a useful way to vent out frustration or negative feelings.

I love doing this on my computer simply because there isn’t any other device that I own that can run such demanding games. I did own a console before, but it became obsolete and therefore, I Do not use it anymore. Plus, my computer is also used for work, so it serves a dual purpose.

For more ideas about Gaming, watch the video.

Cue Card 3 on Technology

Describe a piece of modern technology you own.

You should say:

  • what it is
  • what you use it for
  • how long you have owned it
  • and explain why it is important to you.

Answer

The most modern piece of modern technology that I own is called a UV Sanitization machine. It is used for sanitizing objects that enter your home. The sanitization helps to cleanse all germs or viruses from the items and therefore protect us from getting the virus by accident.

It has been used mostly for sanitizing phones, earphones as well as food items and other essentials that we get delivered from stores. It works by bombarding the food with UV-C rays to kill all the viruses that might remain on the product. It can be used for almost any item that you can think of. It can also fit a large number of items inside due to its vast storage capacity. Most importantly it can be handled by almost anyone.

I have owned it for about nine months now. In fact, I had bought it just before the pandemic hit the country. It is vital because it is the only device that I know of that can thoroughly clean any item.

Cue Card 4 on Technology

Describe an important technological advancement in your country.

You should say:

  • what it is
  • how it has happened
  • how long it took
  • and explain what effect it has had on the people in your country.

Answer

I think that one of the most important advancements in my country is the development of better equipment with a restricted budget done by ISRO. They have managed to send rockets into orbit with a record hundred and four satellites, breaking the previous record.

They have also managed to send a rocket to the moon with a substantially smaller budget than any other space research organization. This is important because this shows that we can reach space without compromising quality and not requiring a huge budget. This is important as it can help reduce the cost of space missions by a lot. It can also help increase space tourism as the quality rises with less budget.

It took ISRO about ten to eleven years to figure out how to build better rockets. They also poured most of their budget on how to build the most cost-efficient spacecraft as well as how to make it safer.

This advancement has made the people of my country feel pride in the ISRO programs. The government has now allocated a lot of money solely to the dedication of space research and other applications and many foreign space agencies have now tried to collaborate with our space agency.

Importance of Technology

IELTS Speaking Part 3

Electronic devices

What are the most popular electronic devices in today’s world?

I think today almost everyone owns a personal computer or a laptop. They are powerful machines that can run entire businesses from practically around the world. The majority of the world has switched to laptops from PCs as they are portable and well as powerful.

What devices do you think will be popular in the future?

While laptops have had a massive breakthrough when it comes to scientific advancements, I feel that our phones will be more popular. They are getting bigger and companies have found ways to make them a lot powerful than they were in the past. They might even replace our laptops someday.

Let’s move on to the role of electronic devices in today’s society.

Do you think people spend too much money on electronic devices?

Yes. I do believe that people spend a lot of money on electronic devices. The prices of devices nowadays have been skyrocketing. No device used to be above seven hundred dollars. Now, we see devices worth two thousand on the market.

In what ways can electronic devices make our lives harder?

Electronic devices can get a person addicted to social media and online content. There have also been psychological reports of people getting depressed and sleep-deprived from constantly being logged on to their devices. The devices also have a detrimental effect on physical health as well.

Future of Technology

Computers

What would the world be like without computers?

A world without computers would not be great. Computers have single-handedly catapulted us into being an advanced civilization. Without computers, most of what we do in a day would take days or weeks or even months to accomplish.

Should children be taught to use computers at school?

Given that computers are instrumental in shaping the future, it is my opinion that it should be mandatory for children to be taught computers in school. Currently, there are inadequate or outdated lessons being taught to school children.

Let’s move on to how modern technology influences the way that people manage time.

Do you think computers make it easier or more difficult to manage time?

I believe that computers are wonderful in helping us manage time. There are many time management apps that you can use to plan your day. This makes computers beneficial as a time management tool.

Internet

How do you think the Internet will change people’s buying habits in the future?

The internet brought the concept of targeted ads. These ads collect data about your preferences and then send you an ad based on your buying habits. Therefore, it sends ads for things that you would want in the future. This makes shopping for almost anything easy.

What are the pros and cons of shopping online?

In my opinion, shopping online is really easy. You don’t have to do much except search for a product online and house a site to buy it from. One major con of shopping online would be the irritating ads that you get all the time after you have searched for a product.

Is the Internet important for education?

I don’t think that the internet is important right now. However, the pandemic has proved that the internet has the potential to be one of the most important tools for education. There are several tutorials and various do-it-yourself videos on millions of topics. Therefore, the internet is bound to play an important role in education, just not now.

Do you think parents should supervise their children’s use of the Internet?

I firmly believe that there should be adult supervision when it comes to children using the internet. Children are notorious for finding ways around parental controls and therefore should be supervised in person.

What’s the best age for children to use the Internet?

I believe that that the best age for children should be at eight years of age. This is because children should be semi-mature before being allowed to use the internet. The parents should also install blocker software to keep the children from visiting any sites that they think is inappropriate.

Watch a video on how children use internet

Why do children start using the Internet very early nowadays?

Children start using the internet from the beginning because the traditional methods of entertainment have all but faded away. You can find much better entertainment on the internet that you can anywhere else. Additionally, the internet can be accessed from everywhere.

Let’s move on to what people do on the Internet.

What do you think people do on the Internet?

I think people mostly use the internet for work and entertainment. I use the internet a lot as my job depends on it. Due to the internet, people have been able to make creative entertainment shows and movies. People also use the internet to go shopping.

What about elderly people? Do elderly people use the Internet very much?

No. I do not think that elderly people use the internet very much. A lot of elderly people have little to no idea about how to use it. They also do not know what to search for or what to do when connected to the internet.

Technology

How can modern technology help people arrive early?

I believe that modern technology such as Global Positioning System or GPS can use real-time data to analyze the quickest route from one place to another. It can also adjust the route depending on changes in the traffic or weather. People can also plan their routes accordingly because of this and be early for an event.

Do you think it is easy to manage your time in the modern world?

Yes. Thanks to smartphones and other devices, I can set reminders and times limits to what I can do and when I can do it during the day. This helps me to manage my day efficiently. I can also give myself a healthy diet as well as analyze my health in real-time.
