Many countries spend a lot of money on major sports competitions IELTS 7 band essay sample answer

This is true that in recent times, many countries are splurging extravagant sums of money on sports competitions and it has led to many people criticizing as to whether such expenditure of public money is justified when there is genuine need to address other pressing public issues such as infrastructure, education and unemployment etc.

Though at the outset it may seem that money spent on sports competitions is wastage of public reserves but it is not accurate reflection of the situation. The truth is when countries undertake to spend money on such competitions it is in the form of upgrading infrastructure such as roads and other related facilities in sports stadiums, this in turn helps to generate employment for the local industry, thus this spending should not be seen as merely wastage of public funds alone. Moreover competitions of such huge magnitude give opportunity to countries to showcase its prowess and provide clout in international matters and respect from other nations.

On the other hand extravagant spending of the public money is not justified either because this precious resource could be used in a better way such as building schools and providing other basic necessities such as clean drinking water etc. Spending huge amount of money for the sake of false pride and showoff is not in public interest hence government before spending money should make careful evaluation of the available resources so as to make informed decision before spending huge sums of money.

To conclude, though it is important to build infrastructure as per the international standards in competitions because not only it is a matter of country’s pride but it also generates revenue because of heavy inflow of international tourists. At the same it should also not be forgotten by the decision makers that such lavish expense just to show off is not justified either when there are other crucial matters of national importance are crying for urgent attention.
