The future simple tense is used to describe actions or events that will happen in the future.

  1. Future simple tense with normal verbs

a. It is formed with the auxiliary verb “will” followed by the base form of the main verb.

For example:

  • I will go to the store.
  • She will finish her homework.
  • They will visit their grandparents.

b. Future simple tense in the negative form

In the negative form, the auxiliary verb “will” is followed by “not” and the base form of the main verb.

For example:

  • I will not go to the store.
  • She will not finish her homework.
  • They will not visit their grandparents.

c. Question form

In the question form, the auxiliary verb “will” is placed before the subject and the base form of the main verb is placed after the subject.

For example:

  • Will I go to the store?
  • Will she finish her homework?
  • Will they visit their grandparents?
  1. Future simple tense with verb “be”

a. In the future simple tense, the verb “be” is used as a main verb in the present tense.

For example:

  • I will be at the store at 3:00.
  • She will be finished with her homework by 6:00.
  • They will be at their grandparents’ house at 7:00.

b. In the negative form, the auxiliary verb “will” is followed by “not” and the present tense form of the verb “be”.

For example:

  • I will not be at the store at 3:00.
  • She will not be finished with her homework by 6:00.
  • They will not be at their grandparents’ house at 7:00.

c. In the question form, the auxiliary verb “will” is placed before the subject and the present tense form of the verb “be” is placed after the subject.

For example:

  • Will I be at the store at 3:00?
  • Will she be finished with her homework by 6:00?
  • Will they be at their grandparents’ house at 7:00?

How to use Future simple tense in IELTS exam?

In the IELTS exam, you may be asked to use the future simple tense to describe plans or predictions that you have for the future. It is important to use this tense correctly and consistently in your writing and speaking tasks.

Here are a few tips for using the future simple tense in the IELTS exam:

  1. Use the correct form of the auxiliary verb “will”: Make sure to use the correct form of “will” based on the subject of the sentence. The correct forms are: “I will,” “you will,” “he/she/it will,” “we will,” “you will,” “they will.”
  2. Use the base form of the main verb: After the auxiliary verb “will,” use the base form of the main verb (also known as the infinitive form). For example: “I will go,” “she will study,” “they will visit.”
  3. Use the present tense form of the verb “be” as the main verb: When the verb “be” is used as the main verb in the future simple tense, use the present tense form: “I will be,” “she will be,” “they will be.”
  4. Make sure to use the correct verb tense: It is important to use the future simple tense consistently in your writing and speaking tasks. Make sure not to mix tenses within a sentence or paragraph.

Here are a few examples of how you might use the future simple tense in the IELTS exam:

Writing Task 1:

“In the future, I will study computer science at university. I will complete my degree in three years and then I will start working as a software engineer.”

Speaking Task 2:

“I plan to go back to school in the future to get my Master’s degree. I will study online and I will complete the program in two years. After that, I will look for a job in my field.”

Writing Task 2:

“Many people believe that robots will replace human workers in the future. While it is true that robots are becoming more advanced, I do not think they will completely replace human workers. Humans will always be needed to make decisions and solve complex problems that robots cannot handle.”
