This leisure club listening test page brings you Section 2 of Cambridge IELTS 10 Listening Test 1 in full: the official answer key for Questions 11–20, playable audio, an explanation for every question with the exact transcript line that proves it, and the complete recording script. The recording is a welcome talk by fitness manager Sandy Fisher, who tours the LP Club facilities and its membership choices, tested through a Choose TWO item and eight note completion gaps.

Two prices sit close together — the £90 joining fee beside the £50 gold monthly rate — and the outdoor pool never exists, because the glass roof above the water simply opens. Follow the note completion strategy for the eight written gaps, then mark every answer on the complete Cambridge IELTS 10 Listening Test 1 answers page covering all four sections.

Leisure Club Answer Explanations

11. A (the gym) — the speaker lists the club’s recent improvements, and the gym leads them: “recently refurbished fitness suite has all the latest exercise equipment”. The ten new running machines put the refurbishment beyond doubt, so the gym is one of the two correct facilities.

12. C (the indoor pool) — the pool is the second improvement, because “we’ve expanded it to eight lanes, it’s much wider”. D fails since “there isn’t space for an outdoor pool here”, and E fails because the children’s tuition from trampolining to yoga is long-standing rather than recent.

13. health problems — the assessment begins with paperwork: you “fill in a questionnaire giving details of any health problems”. The trainer then works through the answers, so the questionnaire is what collects the health problems.

14. safety rules — before any member touches the machines, “The trainer will then take you through the safety rules for using the equipment”. Sports injuries are the risk these rules exist to prevent, so the first lesson is the safety rules.

15. plan — the assessment closes when “the trainer will draw up a plan”, which sets targets for a six-week period. The six weeks is the review point rather than the answer, so the document itself is the plan.

16. joining — every member pays twice at the start: “a joining fee of £90” plus the monthly rate. Monthly belongs to the recurring fees already printed in the notes, so the one-off payment is the joining fee.

17. free entry — gold membership’s advantage is stated plainly: “Gold membership entitles you to free entry at all LP Clubs”. Booking preferences at busy times belong to Premier members, so the gold benefit is free entry.

18. peak — Premier membership helps busy professionals because the club “gives booking preferences to Premier members at peak times”. Daytime work commitments are what keep them away, and the sessions they win are the peak ones.

19. guests — Premier is for individuals only, yet each month “you will be sent passes for guests”. Reciprocal arrangements cover other clubs, so the monthly passes are for guests.

20. photo card — clothes and equipment are provided, but one item is not: “remember your photo card because you won’t be able to get in without it”. Robes and hairdryers wait in the changing rooms, so entry depends on the photo card.

Listening Transcript — Section 2

On behalf of LP Clubs, I’d like to welcome you all here today. My name’s Sandy Fisher and I’m one of the fitness managers here. Before we start our tour of the club I’ll just run through some basic information about the facilities we have here, including recent improvements, and explain the types of membership available.

Our greatest asset is probably our swimming pool which at 25 metres isn’t Olympic-sized, but now we’ve expanded it to eight lanes, it’s much wider. This means there are rarely more than a couple of people at a time in each lane. Unfortunately, there isn’t space for an outdoor pool here but the glass roof on the swimming pool is partly retractable, which means you can enjoy something of the open-air experience on warmer days.

Our recently refurbished fitness suite has all the latest exercise equipment including ten new running machines, and a wide range of weight-training machines. Each member is given full training in how to operate the equipment and there is always a trainer on duty to offer help and advice. Although we do have adult-only times after 6 and at certain times at weekends, children are well catered for. Older children continue to benefit from a wide range of tuition; anything from trampolining to yoga.

——————

One thing all our members appreciate about us is that we take very good care of them. This starts on day one with your personal assessment. You are asked to fill in a questionnaire giving details of any health problems. One of our personal trainers will then go through this with you.

The trainer will then take you through the safety rules for using the equipment in the fitness suite. During your next exercise session a personal trainer will work with you to make sure you understand these. It’s very important to do this because we really do want to avoid having any sports injuries. There’s a lot more to looking after yourself than simply lifting weights!

At the end of the personal assessment, the trainer will draw up a plan, outlining what you should try to achieve within a six-week period. This will then be reviewed at the end of the six weeks.

Now, I’ll just quickly run through the types of membership we have available. All members must pay a joining fee of £90 in addition to the rates for the monthly membership fees. Gold membership entitles you to free entry at all LP Clubs. There are now LP clubs in all major cities and towns so if you travel a lot will be a great advantage. Individual gold membership costs £50 a month and joint membership for you and your partner will cost £75.

Premier membership is for professional people whose work commitments make it difficult for them to use the club during the day and so LP gives booking preferences to Premier members at peak times. This means you will find it easier to book the sessions at times that suit you. Reciprocal arrangements with other LP Clubs are available to Premier members. Premier membership is for individuals only, but you will be sent passes for guests every month. The monthly fee is £65.

You don’t have to have any special clothes or equipment when you visit the club. We provide robes and hairdryers in the changing rooms, but it’s very important to remember your photo card because you won’t be able to get in without it.

For people who aren’t working during the day then …

Study Tips

Questions 11 and 12 are a Choose TWO task, and the recording names all five options. The outdoor pool appears only to be denied — “there isn’t space for an outdoor pool here” — and the children’s tuition from trampolining to yoga is a standing feature rather than a recent improvement. Eliminate as you listen with the multiple choice strategy, and give the two letters in either order.

Questions 13–20 allow NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS, and several keys spend both: health problems, safety rules, free entry and photo card must be written in full or they score nothing. The note completion strategy trains you to count words before the recording moves on to the next membership tier.

Separate the money. The £90 joining fee is one-off, £50 is the monthly gold rate for an individual, £75 covers a couple jointly and £65 is Premier, and each figure answers a different gap in the membership notes. Match the price to its category rather than to the order in which you hear it.
