IELTS vs Duolingo English Test: Acceptance and Scores

A comparison between IELTS and Duolingo English Test scores

I still remember when one of my students, let’s call him Alex, came to me in a panic last year. He had his university application deadline in three days, and all the IELTS test dates were fully booked. “What about Duolingo?” he asked, eyes wide with hope.

It’s a question I’m hearing more and more these days. With the rise of digital testing, the monopoly of giants like IELTS and TOEFL is being challenged by the new kid on the block: the Duolingo English Test (DET). And let’s be honest, the idea of taking a test from your bedroom in your pyjamas for a fraction of the price sounds pretty appealing, doesn’t it?

But before you rush to download the app, there are some serious things you need to consider. It’s not just about what’s easier or cheaper; it’s about what will actually get you into your dream university or help you migrate.

In this guide, I’m going to break down the differences between IELTS and Duolingo, compare their scores, and help you decide which one is the right fit for you. Let’s dive in.

What is the Duolingo English Test?

Most of us know Duolingo as that friendly green owl that nags us to practise Spanish every day. But the Duolingo English Test is a serious academic assessment. It’s an adaptive computer-based test that measures your English proficiency.

Unlike the traditional Computer-Delivered IELTS, which you have to take at a specific centre, the DET can be taken online, anywhere, anytime. You just need a computer, a webcam, and a reliable internet connection.

Key Differences Between IELTS and Duolingo

Let’s look at how these two stack up against each other. It’s not just comparing apples to oranges; it’s more like comparing a marathon to a sprint.

Test Format and Duration

IELTS is the heavyweight champion. The test takes about 2 hours and 45 minutes and is divided into four strict sections: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. The Speaking test is done face-to-face with a real human examiner (or via video call), which some students find nerve-wracking but others find more natural.

Duolingo, on the other hand, is fast. The whole thing is done in under an hour. It’s an adaptive test, meaning the questions get harder or easier based on how you answer. If you get a question right, the next one is tougher. This makes it efficient, but it can also feel quite intense because you don’t get a “warm-up” period.

Cost and Convenience

Here’s where Duolingo really shines. An IELTS test will set you back around $215-$250 USD, depending on your location. Duolingo costs just $59 USD (at the time of writing). Plus, you can send your results to an unlimited number of institutions for free. With IELTS, you usually get 5 free score reports, and then you have to pay for extras.

For students on a budget applying to many universities, this is a massive factor.

Difficulty Level

Is Duolingo easier than IELTS? Yes and no.

Many students find Duolingo less stressful because of the shorter duration and the comfort of being at home. The questions are shorter and often feel more like puzzles. However, the adaptive nature means it will quickly find your level and push you. You can’t really “learn the test” in the same way you can prepare for IELTS with strategies and templates.

Score Comparison: IELTS vs Duolingo

This is the most common thing students ask me: “What is a 7.0 in Duolingo scores?”

While there’s no perfect conversion because the tests measure skills differently, here is a general guide based on official data. You can also use our IELTS Band Score Calculator to understand IELTS scoring better.

IELTS Band ScoreDuolingo Score (DET)CEFR Level
8.5 – 9.0155 – 160C2
7.5 – 8.0135 – 150C1
6.5 – 7.0115 – 130B2/C1
5.5 – 6.095 – 110B2
4.0 – 5.070 – 90B1

Most universities that accept Duolingo will ask for a score between 105 and 125, which corresponds roughly to an IELTS 6.0 to 7.0.

Acceptance: Who Takes What?

This is the deal-breaker.

IELTS is the gold standard. It is accepted by over 11,000 organisations worldwide, including almost every university in the UK, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand, plus immigration bodies. If you want to migrate to Canada or Australia, for example, Duolingo is currently not accepted for visa purposes. You must take IELTS (or PTE/CELPIP).

Duolingo grew massively during the pandemic and is now accepted by over 4,000 institutions, primarily in the USA. Many top US universities like Yale and Columbia accept it. However, in the UK and Australia, acceptance is more limited, often restricted to foundation courses or pre-sessional English programmes, though this is changing.

Crucial Tip: Always check the specific requirements of the university or visa you are applying for. Never assume!

Which Should You Choose?

So, which one is right for you? Here is my honest advice:

Choose IELTS if:

  • You are applying for migration or a visa (e.g., UKVI, Canadian PR).
  • You are applying to universities in the UK, Australia, or Canada (it’s the safer bet).
  • You prefer a structured test where you can learn specific strategies for each section.
  • You prefer speaking to a human rather than a computer screen.

Choose Duolingo if:

  • You are applying primarily to US universities.
  • You are on a tight budget.
  • You need results instantly (Duolingo results come in 48 hours; IELTS takes 3-13 days).
  • You have severe test anxiety and perform better in your own home environment.

Conclusion

Both tests are excellent measures of English proficiency. Duolingo offers incredible convenience and value, making it a great option for supplementary applications or specific universities. However, IELTS remains the universally accepted credential, especially for immigration and global mobility.
