Modern technology has made shopping today easier band 8 IELTS Essay sample answer

In order to create economies of scale with minimal staffing or need for physical stores, service providers and consumer outlets are shifting the focus of their businesses online. This creates a host of advantages for both consumer and provider but can also lead to some problems for certain sectors of society. All things considered, I maintain this is generally advantageous and is why the practice is being so widely adopted.

Shopping online is usually faster and more convenient for both parties in the transaction. Consumers have access to a wide variety of stores at the click of a button, which negates the need to travel and deal with the difficulties of visiting a store. Furthermore, a website can instantly show a huge range of products and finding the one that suits you is made easy through the use of extremely user-friendly filters. Shipping is carried out automatically from a vast warehouse and customers simply need to provide a delivery address. Payment is usually instant, secure and made by credit or debit card. There is no need for cash or to visit a store. All of these benefits above, and more, allow businesses to reduce costs and ultimately prices, which is a further benefit to the consumer.

Although it would appear that online shopping is a blessing to consumers there are some members of society that may find it troublesome. These are generally the old, the foolish or computer illiterate. The elderly may find it difficult to navigate the myriad options available and may yearn for the ‘old days’ when there was less choice. They could also be susceptible to online fraud due unfamiliarity with sophisticated online scams. Huge losses could be incurred if they unwittingly divulge their financial details. Equally, young and unwise members of society might choose to access their parents accounts and spend large sums of money of products. Online gambling is one area where the weak-willed may be tempted fritter away their salaries and savings, and there are few checks and balances to prevent them.

In conclusion, it is quite easy to extoll the virtues of Internet services, but they could come at a cost for some, if not many, at some point in their lives. Personally, I feel that they are a godsend to society but as with all potentially hazardous things one must act with a degree of prior knowledge and caution.

Student Essay

The role of technological achievements are believed to cause some issues to shopping, others think that modern technological inventions are conducive to online shopping these days.

The truth with the advent of modern technology is that people can experience many problems while being online. Poorly designed sites could turn the experience into one of hair tugging frustration that was just as slow as a trip to the local store. Factor in problems with privacy, security, customer service and shipping. Consumers can easily have their accounts hacked whilst browsing for items online by clicking strange links and adverts manipulated by anonymous entities, causing considerable financial loss. Plus, the shipping costs can sometimes be a headache for many since even rather cheap products can incur extortionate charges. This means that modern technology with its easy transaction platforms can be troublesome to many.

Online shopping has been made easier due to the appearance of many websites and platforms that allow expedient transactions. Lazada, Shopee or Tiki have a huge range of desirable products available at the click of a mouse, which can then be delivered directly to one’s doorstep. The convenience of this is extremely attractive. Besides, many e-commerce sites are revamping their navigation systems to help shoppers find the right products quickly without having to wade through a sea of irrelevant information or wasting 10 clicks in search of the ideal gift. They are also becoming increasingly intelligent and capable of suggesting relevant products based on one’s search history. Amazon is one such example of this simplification. The company recently rolled out a newly designed welcome page that eliminated most of the tabs that dominated top margin of the page. The company has also decluttered the page by removing promotional graphics, links and text. These improvements have expediated the process for the consumer and, no doubt, increase the companies’ revenue.

In conclusion, it is clear to see that there are both good and bad sides to this development. Personally, I think that we are more likely to benefit from being able to shop online due to the speed and ease with which we can do so and because we will only rarely encounter the difficulties association with online shopping.
